Bike tool Co-op

Community Bike repair Workshop

The primary purpose of the The Bicycle Works was to provide Marin with the tools, knowledge, and materials for bike repair in a co-operative, community workshop space. We believe in empowering people to take charge of their transportation by providing a place where anyone can learn to fix their bike. In the workshop you would find all the tools and supplies you need to repair and maintain your bike. We had lots of used parts and a selection of new parts to purchase to keep your bike on the road. We also had used bikes both ready to go and in need of repair so you can select a bike or learn to build one from scratch. We had a compliment of electric bike equipment, machine tools, and welding gear to use on a range of bike related projects. The Bicycle Works was a Member Based Co-operative where members gain access to the tool shop, get our help on projects, and receive discounts on parts. This important community resource was supported in large part by Membership.

Earn-a-Bike & Work-Trade

For those with limited funds, financial hardship, or who have more time than money, we offered work-trade and earn-a-bike options. No one was turned away for lack of funds, however we did ask that you contribute to the best of your ability. Members and volunteers could earn parts and repairs, or work toward a complete bike for personal transportation.

Consignment Sales

If you had a good quality bike that you would like to sell you could bring it in for consignment. We had a revolving selection of previously owned bikes that we sell for consignees. This was a great service for those who would like to sell their bike but did not want to have to do the work of finding the right customer.
Our split was 40/60 where you take 60% of the sale price when the bike sells. In order to maintain a quality selection of consignment bikes we were selective with the bikes we accepted. If your bike needed work in order to be sold we would perform the necessary repairs for a fee. We set the asking price and best offer with you when you consigned.

Volunteer & Internship

One of the best ways to learn about bikes was to spend some time doing community service at The Bicycle Works. We had many ongoing projects that you can help with regardless of your skill level. Volunteer activities includeed fixing bikes, sorting parts, helping members, cleaning & organizing, gardening, data entry, and outreach. You could earn credit for school with an internship or work off a traffic ticket.

Bicycle Re-Cycling and Donation

We graciously accepted donations of quality used bikes, parts and accessories. In kind donations made our community service work possible. Because people donateed used bikes and parts, we were able to offer affordable bikes and parts to the general public and to those in need. Sales of the used bikes and parts helped keep the lights on and the doors open.
